Total Resistance of a Circuit?
If the circuit below was a complete circuit, and assuming that both batteries were 1.5 volts and each light bulb had a resistance of 10 ohms, how much power is dissipated on bulb D of the circuit. Also, what is the total resistance of the circuit?

((C-D)E) = lightbulbs C and D in series while parallel to E
I should not be doing your homework... but I suppose I have nothing better to do...
V=1.5 + 1.5 = 3.0 V
Reqab = (1/10 + 1/10)^(-1) = 5 ohms
Reqcd = 10 + 10 =20 ohms
Reqcde = (1/20 + 1/10)^(-1) = 6.667 Ohms
Rtotal = Reqab + Reqcde = 5 + 6.667 Ohms = 11.667 Ohms
Itot = V/Rtotal = 3.0/11.667 = 0.257 A
Vab = 5 * 0.257 = 1.285 V
Vcde = 3.0 - 1.285 = 1.715 V
Vcde = Vcd
Icd = Vcd / Rcd = 1.715 / 20 = 0.0858 A
Vd = Icd * Rd = 0.0858 * 10 = 0.858 V
Pd = Vd * Id = RId^2 = Vd^2/R = 0.0736 W

PS. It would seem that the polarity is reversed for what I solved... That really does not change anything... the values stay the same, but the voltages would be negative.
(Keep in mind, there really is no such thing as negative voltage... it's all about point of reference.. (ie: where is the ground plane)
