Would it be better to eat a protein bar before of after a workout?
I am going to be doing mostly cardio. I'm not trying to gain muscle I am really just needing energy for my workout. If I shouldn't eat specifically a protein bar, then what?
I would recommend a low-glycemic carb like brown rice, oatmeal, or sweet potato about 1-1.5 hours before workout. The timing is important because you do not want your stomach competing with your muscles for blood. Low-glycemic will give you more sustained energy through the workout. Breads/jellies/other sugars will give you quick energy followed by a crash due to insulin response.
Immediately after the workout, take in some high-glycemic carbs (sugar, breads, refined grains) along with protein to begin the repair / glycogen replacement process. I expect your protein bar is along the high-glycemic lines...
