What changes in your body, that increase your lactic acid threshold.?
I know that it is possible to increase your LAT, but what exactly changes in your body that allows for this increase? (Do you increase the rate at which mitochondrial respiration happens? or what)
So LAT is when the burn gets unbearable I believe.
Lactic acid is produced in muscles cells undergoing anaeobic respiration, so this is respiration occuring in the cytosol, and not the mitochondria. Mitochondrial respiration, which is aerobic, will be limited by the amount of oxygen supply before any other factor limits it.
I am just making an assumption here, but I would think that anything that increased blood flow to those muscles cells would increase your LAT. More blood means more oxygen, so more aerobic respiration than anaerobic, meaning you will make less lactic acid, and thus last longer before you reach threshold. More blood flow will also pull the lactic acid produced out of your cells quicker, decreasing the lactic acid burden, and I assume the burn.
As you work your muscles and the individual muscle cells get larger I think that the capillaries feeding them also grow. So more use will increase this. There are also supplements that can be taken to improve blood flow, I am not sure how well they work though b/c I am just a nerdy medical student and not a athletic trainer.
Being well hydrated and maintaining an electrolyte balance will also increase the flow to each cell, and increase transport mechanisms across the cellular membrane. Oxygen freely diffuses, but Lactic acid must undergo some transport mechanism, which is probably couples to ion transport across cells. Maintaining a proper balance of your ions will ensure this transport is occurring at its fastest rate, getting rid of the lactic acid.
