What exercises that will improve the muscles used in pull ups can I do at home?
What exercises will make me better at pull ups that I can do in the absence of something to pull up on? Do I just have to use weights?
I don't have random bits of piping hanging off the walls, I could do it over the side of the stairway but this action is perhaps not recommended.
There is only 1 effective way to get stronger at pull ups and that is to practice doing pull ups! Obvious but very true since you are using many muscles (compound muscle groups) at the same time and it's extremely difficult to simulate this without doing the real thing.
I often have my clients do "half pull ups" if they are not able to do many full ones - gradually increasing their full range of movement. Another effective exercise is to simply practice hanging from a bar to increase your grip strength. The longer you can hang, the stronger you will become at pull ups. Another tip is to squeeze your shoulder blades back and down for 60 seconds whilst you hang to increase endurance in your lats and rhomboids - 2 of the major sets of muscles used in pull ups.
If you have nowhere to practice then the next best thing would be bent over single arm rows to develop lat and rhomboid strength on both sides. Here, you want to aim for 6-8 repetitions (3-4 sets) on both sides to build strength.
