Could leg and wrist weight hurt you?
Im 14 and was into kickboxing for a long time.Im thinking of turning pro when i grow up so my question is could wearing leg weights hurt me? Like stunt my growth or damage my ankles, or would it just get my body use to the new weight(making me faster and stronger when i take them off).Same question for wrist weights could they stretch out my arms or something? Ty in advance
I was a big proponent of using wrist/ankle weights. After a while of using them myself, as well as some research and a little more insight into the matter, I really don't advise anyone to use them.
Foremost, I'll say that I never had great joints to begin. Be it something that runs in my family, a lifetime of poor nutrition, or just a rough childhood, my joints weren't great before I started strapping on weights. They weren't terrible, but they weren't great. Now, my joints are pretty not good. Still not terrible, but I get a lot more trouble from them than I did before I went through my strap-on-weights period. Weights can put stress on your joints in a bad way.
My next point is that it hurts your technique, which then can actually take away power from your strikes. It basically affects how your strikes are being ingrained into muscle memory, and it does this in multiple ways. The biggest in my mind is that it gets the muscles trying to move weight that isn't there. When you're throwing the strike for real (without weights) you want to be moving the natural weight of your limb/body quickly, not moving the weight of your limb/body as well as trying to move weight that isn't there. It's like the muscles fire differently, and them trying to throw around weight that isn't there makes the muscles counteract one another and actually slow you down. I actually heard of a study that promotes that notion - the study said that swinging a weighted baseball bat before swinging a unweighted bat can actually slow down your swings of the regular bat. Then you also have to consider the added drag from the weights. The weight pulls your limb down, so you're forced to compensate for that. This, I believe, hurts your accuracy in that it gets you in that habit of aiming a little higher than your target. And finally, you're going to get tired. You're going to get all tuckered out, and still be trying to throw strikes with that weight on, and you're going to get very, very sloppy. And that sloppiness will get stuck in your head, and you can get use to it.
I'm sure there's plenty of other good reasons not to use wrist/ankle weights, but those are all of the ones I can recall at the moment. So really, my advice is to just work your technique to perfection. I know guys who can lift more weight than I can, and I know guys who are faster than me, but because I have better skill than them, I remain confident.
Take this to heart, the best fighters in the world aren't the best because they're the strongest or fastest. They're the best because they truly know how to fight.
You can still gain speed and strength through weight lifting if you really want to go that route.
