10 points on genetics!?
genetics, biology. plz show work and put a picture if u can! thanks 10 points first answer!
1.) About 70% of Americans get a bitter taster from PTC paper; others don't. The ability to taste PTC results from a dominant gene while non-tasting is recessive. A woman with normally pigmented skin and no taste for PTC has a father who is an albino-taster. She married an albino man who can taste PTC, but who has a mother who cant taste PTC. show the types of children of this couple may have.
2.) In the domestic swine, a white belt around the body is dominant to theuniformlyy colored body. Some hogs have a fusion of the 2 elements of their hoof to produce a mule-footed condition (syndactyly). This also is due to a dominant gene. A farmer wishes to raise only belted swine with normal feet, but there are some solid-colored and some mule-footed hogs in his pens. How would you advise him to proceed in his efforts to establish pure-breeding; belted hog with normal feet??
This took way too long trying to make it look pretty
1) We'll say dominant tasting is PP, recessive non-tasting is pp. And dominant normal pigmentation is NN, and recessive albinoism aa.
The woman's father is an albino (aa) taster (P?). In order for the woman to have both recessive genes for non-tasting, she would have to have received each from both parents, making the father a taster genotype of (Pp).
So the woman's skin genotype is (Na) normal, taste genotype is (pp) non-taster.
The man's mother is a non-taster (pp). We don't need to know her full genotype (?a) since we already know the man is an albino (aa).
So the man's skin genotype is (aa) albino, taste genotype is (Pp) taster.
When married, their possible offspring are: (husband across, wife down)
....... aP ..... ap ..... aP ..... ap
Np.. NaPp . Napp . NaPp . Napp
ap .. aaPp . aapp . aaPp . aapp
Np .. NaPp . Napp . NaPp . Napp
ap .. aaPp . aapp . aaPp . aapp
genotypes:
4 = NaPp (Normal skin, tasting)
4 = Napp (Normal skin , non-tasting)
4 = aaPp (Albino, tasting)
4 = aapp (Albino, non-tasting)
phenotypes also match those numbers.
2) The easiest thing is to tell the farmer not to breed those at all and breed the "some" that are already purebred. But I think this problem is suppose to presume that there are only solids with normal feet and belted with mule feet to make it hard for us
Don't breed same phenotype with each other. Only with a different phenotype:
solid, normal feet = bbnn
belted, mule feet = BBMM, BbMM, BBMn, BbMn
Since solid/normal are already recessive genes, there is no point in breeding it with another recessive. You'll just get the same thing. It's a purebreed in its own.
So when you mix up the two, already you can tell, the dominant belted gene will populate the majority of future generations. They key now is getting a lot of offspring to catch that BBnn or Bbnn, phenotype belted/normal. The more you have of these in a single generation, the less chances there are of inbreeding birth defects/diseases.
