Problems with Young's Modulus!?
Having a problem with an assignment - A simple machine comprising 2 pillars, 2 plates and a lead screw is used to press an object.
Part (i) is –
What diameter must the pillars be to sustain a load of 25kN, as applied by the lead screw with a maximum permissible stress of 120MPa?
Length = 500mm
Matl - Carbon Steel Yield Strength - 310MPa
Modulus of Elasticity - 210 x 10^9 N/m^2
For this I am getting 11.52mm DIA. For this i used:
A = F/ Stress
= 12.5 x10^3 / 120
However part two:
What diameter must the pillars be to limit the extension to 2mm?
I worked out the strain (Extension / Original length) = 0.004.
Can anyone give me any pointers as to what I should do next?

The answer is at the tip of your pencil. You have got the strain. The Extension is 2mm. It means that Strain * original length =2mm,
Strain now needs to be calculated. Once you get the strain, multiply it by the Youngs Modulus (Modulus of Elasticity), you get the stress. Now, the Force is known (25kN / 2) You can get the area and hence the diameter.
