Approximate equivalency between selectorized stacked-plate bench press machine versus free weights...?
My gym has a Body Masters MD-311A bench press machine, with a iron plate weight stack that goes up to 400 pounds. I've been doing a massive amount of strength training lately, and I am able to bench the full stack (a one-rep max lift), PLUS an extra 61 pounds of dumbells that I stack on top of the plates (two 15 pounders, two 10 pounders, one 8 pounder and one 3 pounder), for a total bench of 461...
I would like to know what APPROXIMATE free-weight bench this would translate to... I can't do free weights because there is never anyone at the gym when I go that can spot me. I know it's going to be a lot less, but... any ideas? Thanks!
SECOND QUESTION: Should I eat a protein bar (32 grams Metrx) prior to lifting, or just after?
Oh, and don't let my picture fool you! lol... It is ten years old. I'm a LOT bigger now...
even without a spotter, there's no excuse to not use freeweights. do dumbbells. if you can't push it up, just let it drop to your side. you're misssing out on a lot of extra muscle fibers that could be growing from having to stabilize each dumbbell through the full range of motion. the machines pretty much takes away that entire aspect. you can also add explosive or one handed push-ups to work your chest/shoulders/triceps some more. i know i can get about 3 plates on each side, but i've never worked out with more than a 70 lbs dumbbell. just try a 50 pound for the hell of it and getting a feel for the weight, then adjust accordingly.
protein should be consumed AFTER working out, along with carbs. the former is needed for muscle repair while the latter will replenish your glycogen reserves that have been used up during the workout.
