Can a huge man rock climb?

Ok here the run down. I'm am 6' 3 and 310 pounds with a huge body frame. I have been interested in rock climbing for quite some time. I currently live in Middle Tennessee and know of a few places to go try. Does anyone else besides me thinking that I would have huge problem trying this? I am no physical condition to do it nor have I ever tried to do it. I would love to hear some options and maybe some starter tips so I don't hurt myself.

Rock climbing ability critically depends on strength-to-weight ratio, which is a problem with heavier guys, even if they are quite strong. High strength-to-weight ratios favor the leaner people, although there are trade-offs in being short or tall (tall people can reach higher or further out). There's another factor, and that has to do with how close you can keep your center of gravity to the rock, which is an advantage in many situations. If you are a "thick" person, your center of gravity could be too far out of "plumb" with your feet (or foot) that is on the rock, so you can find yourself constantly "pinching the rock" to keep from toppling over backwards. This can get very tiring and you could get burned out too soon.

Does that mean you should give up the idea of climbing rocks? No, you can still have a good time climbing rocks, it's just that maybe you'll have to forget about 5.10 climbs and above. You can still have a lot of fun on 5.0 to 5.9 climbs. How can you tell if you're physically prepared for climbing? Get a long straight ladder, put it up against a building, and see how much trouble is it for you to climb up and down the ladder a few times. If you find this difficult, then, finally, maybe you better diet first, and do some physical training for it.

I have to admit that I almost never see climbers heavier than about 250 lbs. That is a rarity.
