HOW TO TURN A STORY PROBLEM INTO Y=MX+B FORM?
A company has a manufacturing plant that is producing quality USB drives. They find that in order to produce 170 USB drives in a month, it will cost $5640. Also, to produce 480 USB drives in a month, it will cost $12460. Find an equation in the form where is the number of USB drives produced in a month and is the monthly cost to do so.
Well first we have to find the slope, which is the difference in dependent and independent variables. In this case, your dependent will be the cost, since that depends on the number of USB drives. That means the number of USB drives is the independent variable.
Slope = (Cost1 - Cost2)/(Number of USB1 - Number of USB2)
= (12460-5640)/(480-170) = 22
so y=mx+b, and m=22
To solve for b, place the slope into the equation and one point from the problem, and solve for B
5640 = 22*(170)+b
b= 1900
so the whole equation will be y=22x+1900
