A question about windmills?
I have two large bicycle rims being used for a virtual windmill generator. I have five small 4in dryer pipes opened fastened between the rims catching the wind. It rotated fairly well on 20mph winds in all directions with no problem. I placed in a pulley near the top with a small belt driving a large 90v DC motor. When large gusts of wind hit it, it begins to turn but the DC motor drags somewhat slowing it down leaving me with about 6v when I need at least 12v.
If I add another bicycle rim on top with five more blades, will this increase the power to drive the DC motor, and will it go faster?
Winter is almost here in my area for I live in Michigan, I have a good amount of wind in the winter months. What do you think about this setup, will it work?
This setup will be used to charge 12v batteries in my basement, and I do have a charge controller to avoid overcharging.
It sounds to me like you have created a vertical axis wind generator instead of the commonly seen horizontal axis generators. These may give more torque and catch wind from all directions but suffer from not catching enough wind. If you separated two bicycle wheels and attached vanes between them it would no doubt be more efficient than your drier pipes.

Here is a wind generator calculator that might also be of some help: http://en.kendincos.net/video-fjvnldhj-vawt-windmill-calculator.html
