What do Performance-oriented camshaft profiles do?
i was looking up specs on a car engine and on one of its "revolutionary" so-and-sos and i would like to know what does this do for an engines performance?
So basically a cam controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves.
The faster they open and close the better, so you get a very steep lobe, shaped more like and egg than the normal more teardrop shaped lobes.
Next you want them open at max as long as possible to move the fuel in and get the burned fuel out. There will be some overlap and with more performance oriented ones the overlap can be more. A loss in economy for the pursuit of power.
You will get more power and a change in the sound of the engine, if you get a seriously hardcore cam you will have a chunky idle and maybe even have to boost the idle to keep it from stalling at idle.
