Which saddle should i choose?
So we want to buy a saddle to be able to start my horse. This weekend we went to the ttack store and found a nice Pro Am synthetic saddle 17inch seat and a wide tree (Wich we need) for 195$
then we found a saddle package on pleasent ridge in ontario and my mother thinks we should get the package since it comes with the saddle,gearth,leather,stirrups, pad and bridle for 209.95 and we dont pay shipping sice we are in canada (we just have to see if the have the saddle in wide tree)
But the Pro am saddle we were looking at is new but doesnt come with the leathers or girth just the stirrups
So wich saddle would you choose?
-Pro Am +plus we have to buy leathers,saftey stirrups and saddle pad
-The apprentice all purpose or closed contact saddle package ( we wont use the bridel since we use a bitless)

Well I would definately NOT buy the apprentice. At $195 for the entire package I was certain it would be a cheap piece of worthless junk, and when I followed your link I found I was right! Why is it that the cheaper the price of the all purpose saddle, the more rediculously forward-cut the flap is? Look at the more expensive Avante A/P saddle at the top and look where the flap is positioned. So that the rider's leg when properly positioned will fall right in the center of the flap. Now look at the apprentice A/P model. Either you'll have to ride in a total chair seat (where your legs are way too far forward) or you'll have to fight with the saddle to keep your legs back underneath you and your leg will actually fall BEHIND the saddle flap and be directly on the horse's skin. NOT a good situation either way. You'll never be comfortable in that saddle unless you give in and ride in a chair seat, which is uncomfortable for your horse and will unbalance both of you.
The apprentice close contact sucks too. Close contact saddles with suede knee rolls are entirely unfashionable in the show ring, and only the cheapest brands use them. Plus the leather looks like it won't hold up, and the "banana" shape of the tree on both apprentice models won't fit many horses. Compare the shape of the panels (underside of the saddle) from front to back and see how it curves like a banana? On most horses, the saddle will not sit flat and will rock back and forth. Pretty soon your horse will be grouchy and his back will be sore, not a good situation.
I'm not familiar with the Avante saddles but they look like a better choice. $399 for a saddle still puts it firmly in the "el-cheapo brand" category. I also looked up the Pro Am saddles. It looks obviously synthetic- no way will it pass for real leather. But it looks like a reasonably well balanced saddle, more comfortable for horse and rider. I'd choose it over the apprentice any day. Also notice they come with a lifetime guarantee on the tree- a definite plus!
But I think your best bet would be to look for a better quality saddle than either one of those. If your budget is the problem, you can often get great deals on used saddles. I sold a Keiffer (cost about $2000 new) on ebay once and only got $150 for it. It was in good shape and had just been completely restuffed. That saddle will probably be good for another 25 years of hard riding, while the cheap brands will wear out very quickly. By the way, avoid the Cambridge brand of saddle too. I've seen them and they fall apart in no time, plus put the rider in a very poor position.
