Powerline ethernet or wireless?
I currently have a wireless network in my home. I have Comcast Highspeed internet. My RangeMax wireless modem is in the living room. My desktop pc is in my bedroom and is connected via wireless. That desktop is sharing the internet with my xbox 360 via ethernet cable. (It's the most cost effective set up, without having to deal with the landlord, electricians, purchasing $100 xbox wireless adapters, etc.)
First question: I can go to XBOX LIVE with this set up and play online multiplayer, but I cannot connect to the market place for some odd reason. Is it because of the way I have it hooked up to the internet?
Second question: I have been looking at Powerline ethernet adapters. Does it offer a better connection to the internet than a wireless network? If so, do you think it will help with my XBOX LIVE marketplace problem? Can you recommend a good brand/model for cheap?
I have devolo 200AV powerline adapters.
I do not use them for gaming, but I do use thm for audio and video-streaming.
I have found them an oasis of peace, compared to wobbly. figety wireless (In our house the the access point on the ground-floor would not reach the top floor etc. ). I have replaced wireless with homeplug and am happy with it. On the top floor I have one homeplug ending in a switch (the offic or computerroom has printer, dekstop PC connected to switch next to the router is NAS/External Hardisk, Downstairs is one laptop and two media-players that get tehir data from the NAS).
After over a year I can say that the Powerline-adapters have not let me down once and have been very reliable. Since we had rewiring doen and had a fusebox added I was a bit concerned the powerline might not get past this, but the speeds within the net of one fuse-box are 160 to 180 Mbps and when it crosses to another fusebox speeds drop to between 100 and 130, which is very acceptable.
Powerline is not cheap, but it does save a lot of hassle, resetting, etc. You'd need 1 for the router and one for each attached device. I use three and some cheap switches.
