Who do you think will win (or wont win) the NBA Finals this year and why?
I personally, not because I'm an avid Spurs fan, think that the Spurs will repeat this year because the big three, (Duncan, Parker, Sixth Man of the Year Ginobili), continue to put up big numbers on offense as well as stepping up to the plate on defense. If those three guys combined to give at least 75-80 per game, and with their solid bench players who could put up moderate numbers and play great defense, this team definitely has what it takes.
LOS ANGELES LAKERS will win it all!!!! I'll make a thorough analysis why...
Inside Reasons (within the Lakers):
1. Kobe has gone from selfish to phenomenal-- lowering his scoring average but increasing his assists [getting his teammates involved]... he deserves my nod and the MVP
2. Gasol, Odom, and the whole team are effective supplements to Kobe and to the Lakers' vaunted triangle offense
3. Gasol-- the Lakers' missing piece
4. Phil Jackson--- great dynasty maker... all the teams he led to the #1 seed in the conference goes on to win the NBA title [look at the Bulls, look at the 2000 Lakers]... there's no denying him on this one... he's coming back, and is out to get title # 10 to make him the winningest coach in terms of championships
5. Lakers are effective in playing the triangle (related to #2)... Gasol fits the system, and the play has been very fluid... Remember that its also the triangle that led the Bulls and the 2000-2002 Lakers to the title
6. coz many fans are cheering and praying for them to win... go LAKERS!
Outside reasons (around the league and a look at the other contenders):
1. Spurs are aging and tired, and for sure, fatigue will set in on them by the time they get to face the Lakers
(Suns will make the Spurs suffer, and if ever the Spurs survive the Suns [probably in 7 games], New Orleans might give them a really bad battering unworthy of a champion... if they survive New Orleans in a 6 to 7 game series, they might have lost all the steam heading into a potential matchup with the Lakers, which will result in a really bad bad ending for the Spurs)
2. New Orleans is an inexperienced team... Chris Paul is not enough to lead them past the powerful Lakers core...
3. Utah Jazz... Boozer and Williams are the next Stockton and Malone, BUT they are not Stockton and Malone... they will have their time, but at this point, they cannot get past the Lakers in a probable semis matchup (forget the Rockets... TMac won't make it to the next round)
4. Boston Celtics... the best contender to win it all... they will be tough match for the Lakers in a potential NBA Finals matchup, but like what the asker said, they don't have a Kobe or a really clutch player to hit the last shot (notice it: the Celtics Big 3 are already past their primes, Kobe and Gasol are not... Ray Allen or Paul Pierce being the clutch player they need? let's see if they'll get the ball... the big guys of LA will smother them before they do so) ... second, fatigue might also hurt them, should they be matched up with the Pistons in a tough East showdown...
5. Detroit Pistons... they would be the underdogs (again) in a potential NBA Finals match with the Lakers [still, WATCH OUT...], but as i see it, this 2008 Pistons squad is already a shell of the 2004 squad that pulled an upset over the Lakers' Big 4 (whose got their own internal problems, from Payton and Malone groping at the triangle to Kobe ballhogging in the past, and also, Kobe being bugged by the Colorado rape case)... Ben is gone, the other 4 are already aged... -- the Lakers are rejuvenated... its an all-new Lakers squad that is working their way to the Finals
6. Orlando Magic... Lakers vs Magic in the NBA Finals? Why not? but inexperience (like in 1995), will again hurt Orlando... unlike the Lakers, who has Phil Jackson (who steered his way to 9 NBA Titles and aiming a potential 10th), Kobe Bryant (now leading the Lakers after years of being second fiddle to Shaq), Derek Fisher (who knows how to win with good ballhandling and tough clutch plays), and of course, they have teammates who are hungry to get the ultimate prize...
7. Cleveland Cavaliers... who? Kobe vs LeBron? LeBron is good, but he has no supporting cast who are as hungry for the title as Kobe has with the Lakers...
