Dumbbell Weight Training Technique?
Recently I purchased a set of iron dumbbells at Saturday Flea Market. The dumbbells are welded, meaing I bought dumbbells from 5 lbs to 55 lbs. I wasn't going to buy them, because the technique I was going to use was like 1 set of10 reps of 30 lbs, then 10 repsof 25 lbs, etc., this man said I should do heavy weight and each set lower reps...I have never heard of this? What does this do, he said it builds 1. Strength 2. Muscle size Please Advise!
First, let me congratulate you for making the best purchase of your life.
A dumbbell workout is the best workout you can do. It gives you a greater range of motion than barbells or machines, and gives you independence to workout your non-dominate side equally. There are only a few good exercises you cannot perform or effectively mimic with dumbbells, like cable crossovers, seated rows, and dead lifting (unless you go out a buy seriously heavy dumbbells!)
If you don't already have one, let me recommend buying a decent bench; otherwise, you will not be able to do a number of good exercises like bench press, pec flies, lying triceps extensions, and bend-over rows.
Let me first dispel the myth that lifting heavy weight with fewer reps builds size or muscle, and lifting lighter weight with many reps gives you definition.
It is simply not true.
Lifting heavy weight with few reps (5-8) build strength NOT size.
Lifting lighter weight with many repetitions (15-20) grows muscle and builds size.
You should incorporate both schemes into your weight training routine to effectively build both strength and size. Since, in order to progress to use heavier and heavier weight with 15-20 reps per set you must increase strength.
You should alternate every other week, two weeks, or at most every three weeks, first training lighter with more reps than heavier with fewer reps.
I can offer my own experience as anecdotal evidence.
I am what most weight training professionals refer to as a "hard gainer." Meaning, I do not put on muscle very easily. I am 5'11" and always weight between 155 and 160.
In my early twenties, I firmly believed the myth that if you wanted to gain muscle size you had to lift heavy weights with fewer reps. I tried many different weight training routines, and always ended up quitting after four or five months because I never saw any real gains. I always got stronger, and could progressively lift more weight; but I never really gained much size.
Two years ago, I read Core Performance by Mark Verstegen and starting paying attention to articles written in Men's Health by personal trainers that turned skinny Hollywood actors like Ryan Reynolds and Toby Maguire into muscular "built" action heroes, and I switched my approach.
The fact of the matter is that in order to grow muscle you need to properly fatigue it, each set must last between 55-65 seconds; and in order to accomplish this you must do about 15-20 reps of a given exercise with proper form. Depending on how many exercises you do, two-three sets of each exercise is enough for the growth phase of your workout.
There are two more keys to gaining muscle, vary your workout and get the proper nutrition so your muscles can grow. You must change your workout exercises frequently, as well as, changing the weight and grip. E.g., do triceps extensions for three weeks then do lying triceps extensions for three weeks. Nutrition is possibly the most important thing of all. In order for you to grow muscle you MUST increase the amount of protein you consume a day. If you work out 3-4 times a week you should consume one gram of protein for every pound you weight, every day. Instead of eating three meal a day, eat 5-6 small meals. Always make sure you eat something before you workout and that it contains protein. And ALWAYS, ALWAYS drink a Whey protein shake immediately after you workout, NO Exceptions!
During your workout, you damage your muscles, and your body needs protein to repair these damages. If you do not consume protein immediately your body will harvest your own muscle to create the protein needed to repair the damage, which will, of course, sabotage your gains.
By the way in six months, I went from 155 to 185, and six months after that I was up to 195.
And I almost exclusively workout with dumbbells.
