What would be more effective a weight vest or ankle weights?
I want to build my speed and vertical jump. I was thinking i'll get 10lb ankle weights (each ankle holds up to 10 pounds) or a 40lb weight vest. I was going to do sprints and jump with the ankle weights or vest. I have more uses for the weight vest but i just want to know what's more effective or if it makes a difference or not. i know the ankle weights are a lot cheaper but i have $140 to spend and i found a 40lb weight vest for $70 and 20lb set of ankle weights for $20.
please i need to make this decision today
Can they be effective? Yes. But beware, many people don't realize that the foot/ankle are very delicate and can be compromised easily. This area isn't designed to support added weight and pressure (more than it already has). The shoes and socks (As light as they are) already are enough weight to deal with. So my advice: No to the ankle weights. The risk of injury is too high.
As far as weighted vests, that would be a better choice. Because it distributes weight a little more proportionally, although I'm thinking it might be a risk for the shoulder complex. Check out this article for more info: http://www.livestrong.com/article/310938-are-weighted-vests-safe/
Look into plyometrics (best done with no vest or ankle weights) to help with vertical jump (and speed too). The way to a better vertical jump is increasing power in the legs...which is exactly what plyometrics is designed for. Youtube search "plyometric exercises" for great ideas on different techniques you can use.
For speed, invest in an agility ladder (they too are pretty cheap) And again youtube search can bring of tons of awesome exercises.
