How much would MMA training help with military fitness?
Hi - I was just wondering whether MMA training would help me get into the military at all? I don't mean whether it would make me any more likely to be allowed, but I mean as far as fitness goes.
For example - I know that MMA training relies heavily on circuit training featuring push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, squats and so on, and a lot of running (right from 1.5 miles to 4-8 mile stamina runs), so would this help me pass a military PFT?
The required scores for what I want to do in the military are these:
1.5 mile run - 9:30
Push-ups - 70 (2 mins)
Pull-ups - 10 (no time limit)
Sit-ups - 70 (2 mins)
3 mile run - 20 mins
Basically - will training as an MMA fighter help me get closer to them scores, or will I be trained and conditioned in a way that will hinder me achieveing those results?
Yes any form of interval/cardio based training is best, nearly all military fitness is based around own body-weight drills such as dips, pull ups , press-ups etc.
9.30 for the 1.5 miler is a minimum requirement for my Regiment but remember it is not just a 1.5 mile run it is a 3.5 mile timed squadded run followed then by your 1.5 miler best effort so is 5 miles total. ( for the Parachute regiment)
if you are wanting to join a popular Regiment like the Paras or RMs then you need to be way above the minimum pass rates (at least 8.30 ish 1.5 miler etc) and we have the luxury of being able to carefully pick and choose the best applicants.
I did absolutely no training before joining up and never had any problems but everybody is different and if you are accepted then your PTI will get you up to the required standard no problems
