An investment in a set of quality Bowflex dumbbells will pay for itself over time in ease of use, space savings, convenience, and most important, in the results you'll see in your body. We'll take a look at the Bowflex reviews of each of their adjustable dumbbell systems, reveal the differences between the styles, the benefits and pitfalls of each - everything you need to know to help you make an educated purchasing choice.

The Benefits of Training with Dumbbells
Strength training with free weights will get you the most significant advances in the least amount of time. And dumbbells are more effective than machines or barbells, as your body is compelled to continuously engage supportive muscles to synchronize the lift. Developing your stabilizing and core muscles will give you real world muscle, not only gym machine muscle. With a couple of quality adjustable dumbbells, you can do an complete workout without even leaving house.

Bowflex makes two adjustable dumbbells, the SelectTech 552 and the SelectTech 1090, each designed with a distinct end user in mind. Each features an innovative dial selector that lets you effortlessly dial in the weight selection. As you turn the dial, the handle latches on to more weight plates and  a display shows how much weight you've selected. Adjusting weights with the turn of a dial is simople and having the choice of a number of weight combinations all in a single apparatus is an advantage. If you like to keep your workouts quick and intense, not having to waste time or concentration dropping and adding weight can keep up your intensity level.

Bowflex SectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells
The SelectTech 552 consists of two dumbbells, variable from 5 to 52.5 pounds. This system is intended for the beginner strength trainer or for anyone more serious about toning than building muscle size. The increments are a handy 2.5 pounds for the first 25 pounds, allowing you to steadily move to the next stage without too much strain on your muscles.

The SelectTech 552 combines 15 sets of weights into one practicsal package. The handles are a adequately padded and the dumbbells are substantially more compact than the SelectTech 1090s. This allows for better maneuverability and a natural, balanced feel, similar to a regualr dumbbell. All of this makes them a better choice for those doing high repetition routines, focusing on toning. With the fast switching weight selector dial, the SelectTech 552 is also a great option for anybody trying to keep up with one of the many common workout DVDs.

Adjusting the weights on  carpet can be a challenge - hardwood or concrete floors are much better. Though not a must, there is a dumbbell stand specifically for designed for the SelectTech models - it even wheels away into storage. The stand makes a good addition, especially for safeguard of your lower back as you won't be constantly bending to pick up the weights.

Bowflex 1090 Single Adjustable Dumbbell
In the SelectTech 1090, you get a whole gym rack of dumbbells in a modest footprint. The dumbbell adjusts from 10 - 90 pounds in 5-pound increments. The SelectTech 1090 takes the place of 17 individual traditional dumbbells and with an optimum weight of 90lbs, will in all likelihood be all the weight you'll ever require for serious power training. The 1090 is a superb space saver and offers a large selection of weights combinations.

Unlike the Selecttech 552, the SelectTech 1090 is sold singularly, not as a set. Many exercises are ideally performed with a dumbbell in each hand, so most people will want to have two of the 1090s to enhance their workouts. The chrome handles on the SelectTech 1090s are rough textured and rectangular-shaped. They are less comfortable, particularly at loads over 40 pounds, than the comfortable rubber grips found on the SelectTech 552s, so using some heavy tape or lifting gloves is suggested.

To accommodate 90 pounds, the SelectTech 1090s are 17.5" long, even with only 10 pounds selected. This makes them a bit clumbsy at lower weights and the span can be an issue when executing some exercises like double arm curls because the weights hit when your arms are placed together. To compensate, you can do one set with each arm independently. For most exercises, the length is something you'll grow accustomed to and isn't an concern.

If you recognize the benefits of working out at home but don't have the space for a dedicated exercise room, adjustable dumbbells are a great alternative and the SelectTech 1090 are a sturdy, rugged product. For really serious strength training, adding bulk and building muscle size, the SelectTech 1090s are a great choice.
