what is the best lighting for a 4ft corn snake vivarium?
i am planning to build a vivarium for my 1 year old corn snake she is almost 4ft so i am looking to build a 4 ft long, 2foot high vivarium with black ask conti board and i am planning on heating using a heat mat that will be under a false floor however im worried that it will be very dark so i want to put a light in the vivarium just so that i can see in and it wont be on all the time what kind of light should i use?
Instead of using a heat mat, consider the use of Flexwatt Heat tape instead, or better yet, a Kane heat mat. You can allow for either since you are building this yourself. Unless it gets pretty cool where you will be placing the viv, the heat mat should do the job. Keep in mind the temp range for corn snakes is not nearly as high as with tropical species. You could then include a small florescent light fixture that you can attach to a timer to reliably create a day/night cycle and act as a "viewing" light. The fixture housing will prevent contact with the bulb.
