Tips for Safely Adding Kettlebells to Your Workout Routine
Kettlebells are an incredible tool that should be incorporated into every strength training routine. As the kettlebell grows in popularity, dozens of new workout routines are popping up in gyms, books, and DVD programs. The problem is that not everyone knows how to use these unique weights properly. Working Out with a Pro
You have a few choices when it comes to learning to use kettlebells. You can ask a personal trainer to give you a private lesson, you can hire a trainer to work with you on a regular basis, or you can join a kettlebell class. We recommend starting with at least one private lesson so that you can learn to use your body properly to avoid injury or strain while maximizing your benefits.
Start with Lighter Weights
Kettlebells have a centralized weight while regular dumbbells spread their weight out over the two sides. Because of the design, a 10 lb kettlebell will actually feel heavier than a 10lb dumbbell. Make sure you grab a dumbbell that is a few pounds lighter than you are used to as you are getting started. You can always increase the weight as your body becomes stronger and more used to the routine.
Keep Up the Momentum
Many of the kettlebell exercises combine ballistic or high-velocity movements with speed and momentum. Working with this type of momentum may make you a bit nervous, causing you to slow your workout speed. Slowing down may cause you to inadvertently modify your form. Use a lighter weight until you are more comfortable with the movements. Personal trainers help keep up momentum.
Consider Your Surroundings
Kettlebell workouts involve large, fast, and explosive movements. Make sure you check your surroundings before you begin your workout. Be sure that there are no objects in your path and that you have plenty of space to move around without hitting things (or passing people).
Losing Control
You may at some point lose control of your kettlebell while working out. The worst thing you can do is try to catch the kettlebell or regain control while in the middle of a movement. This type of action could lead to serious injury. You should, if you lose control, simply move your body out of the way so that you do not get injured by the falling kettlebell. The same goes for correcting your form. If you see yourself making a mistake, wait until the next repetition begins to make a correction.
Maintain a Strong Grip
Make sure you keep a strong, focused grip on your kettlebell at all times, whether you're working with heavy weights or lighter weights. Most trainers do not recommend wearing lifting gloves while working with kettlebells because doing so will decrease your ability to feel the weight. You should instead try using chalk to keep your hands from becoming too sweaty.
Talk to Your Doctor
Kettlebell routines incorporate the best of both worlds when it comes to strength training and cardiovascular exercise. Make sure you talk to your physician or health care provider before you start a kettlebell routine to make sure you are able to handle the stress.
