Infinite series -- a hypothetical problem?
Consider the hypothetical problem illustrated in the figure:
Starting with a ball of radius 1 foot, a person stacks balls vertically such that if r_k is the radius of the kth ball, then r_(n+1) = (r_n)*sqrt[n/(n+1)] for each positive integer n.
(a) Show that the height of the stack can be made arbitarily large.
(b) If the balls are made of a material that weights 1 lb/ft^3, show
that the total weight of the stack is always less than 4pi pounds.
My difficulty is to find a closed form formula for r_n. Here are my thoughts:
I need to find a closed form formula for the radius, in order to do
part (b), which is summing the infinite series. I know if I have the closed form formula for radius, I cube and then multiply it by 4pi/3 to get the volume V_n and set V_n -> oo (infinity).
What are some general techniques for converting a recursive formula to a closed form formula, and vice versa? Any help will be appreciated.
Well, it's fairly obvious that r_n = 1/√n. The total height of the stack is the sum of the diameters, which is [n=1, ∞]∑2/√n, which diverges. Conversely, the mass of each ball is 4π/3 (r_n)³, so the total mass of the stack is 4π/3 [n=1, ∞]∑1/n^(3/2). This series converges by the integral test -- indeed, since [n-1, n]∫1/x^(3/2) dx > 1/n^(3/2), we have that:
[n=1, ∞]∑1/n^(3/2)
= 1 + [n=2, ∞]∑1/n^(3/2)
≤ 1 + [1, ∞]∫1/x^(3/2) dx
= 1 + (-2x^(-1/2))|[1, ∞]
= 1 + 2
= 3
So we have 4π/3 [n=1, ∞]∑1/n^(3/2) ≤ 4π. And we are done.
As far as general techniques for converting from a recursive definition to a closed form, this amounts to solving a difference equation. In most cases, you will just have to make intelligent guesses as to the form of the solution and then solve for the undetermined coefficients. In this case, though, you at least have the considerable advantage of being able to write out the first few r_n and look for a pattern, which was really obvious in this case.
The opposite problem, converting a closed-form expression into a recursive formula, is trivial. Given a closed-form expression x_n = f(n), simply write x_(n+1) = (f(n+1) - f(n)) + x_n or x_(n+1) = f(n+1)/f(n) * x_n, and voila -- instant recursive definition.
