2 High School Football Workout Rules You Must Follow
High School Football Workout & Training Tips to Get Faster and Stronger on the Football Field
1. All High School Football Workouts Need to Focus on Getting You Stronger
Let's be honest, unless we're Squatting 800 or Deadlifting 750, we need more strength work. There seems to be a small movement, led by the Crossfit types, who view training heavy for max strength as bad. Many claim that after a while, it's worthless and counter productive.
Well, that may be true if your last name is Bolton, but for us mortals, we need to keep pushing the weights up! Max strength determines how fast you are, how high you jump, and how much force you can produce. If the move from 700 to 750 doesn't produce results on the field then it's not worth the effort. But, again, this is highly individual...and there's not a ton of raw 750-lb squatters in high school or college, so let's keep lifting.
Match up two guys of similar skill and the stronger will always win.
And, if you are of a little less skill, your strength can help equalize.
As long as you are constantly keeping track of your performance, you can see if your strength gains are translating.
You should keep track of everything, not just the reps and weight. Measure progress with:
Indicator lifts like the Bench, Squat, Dead...or Incline, Snatch Grip Dead and Box Squat
10-yard sprints
Behind-the-head Medicine ball throw for distance
Vertical or Long Jump
Shuttle Run
These are just a few. Find tests that give you an idea of how you're progressing. Keep training hard and getting stronger and you'll see all of these tests improve, and when they do, on-field performance usually goes up as well.
2. Speed Work is Important in Your High School Football Training Program but Must Be Football-Specific
Sadly far too many high school football players & coaches are training on track and field programs. Yes, those track guys sure are fast...but, as we've all seen time and time again, when you take them and put them on the football field, they fall apart.
Your football speed training must be very specific to, well, football. Simply training straight-ahead speed will leave you open for major dissapointment when you hit the field.
We need to train in all directions, improve lateral speed and agility, and develop the ability to be fast from all angles. Otherwise, you'll never reach your potential.
This past season I watched or played with a number of guys who had sick speed...but they just can't get it done on the field. They can out run everyone in a straight away, but, when they need to cut, move laterally or explode in different directions, they're toast. Don't be one of those guys.
Make sure you include plenty of lateral work:
Lateral Lunges
Angle Lunges
Lateral Box Jumps
Jump rope, Side-to-Side and One-Leg Jumps
Lateral and Backpedal Sled or Prowler Pulls
And, try your best to do some speed training that mimics what you do on the field, i.e., WR's run patterns, CB's cover, Linemen step & fire out low into a sprint.
