need help with workout strategy?
Hi, I'm 16, 125 lbs, 5'7, so im pretty skinny for my age. I have started to take working out seriously but I am not sure exactly how to approach it. My setup right now is:
- two 10 lb dumbells
- a york workout machine that has equipment for chest, back, triceps, abs, and shoulders
- one 50 lb barbell
This is all I have to work with but the york machine looks to be pretty good for a full workout. The main areas I want to build muscle in are my biceps, wrists, forearms, and chest. What i need to know is: how often to work out, how much i should be lifting at a time, and how long i should work each body part at a time.
I would also like to sort of teach myself how to box. I know I'm obviously not just going to learn how by myself, but are there any specific work outs I can do to make me a better striker anyways?
Thanks.
Well, if you want to gain weight then theres one way to do it: strict isolation exercises.
My names Trey Kornegay, NASM, ISSA, and ACSM certified Personal Trainer, at your service.
When I started out I was tiny, a short kid weighing 90 pounds. But believe me, I read every weight lifting book that came my way. And believe me, I know my stuff.
If you want to increase strength you should do compound movements, working lots of muscle groups at once -- like the deadlift, bench press, squat, pull-up etc. But if you want size then you're going to want to target a single muscle, and blast it to kingdom come. Very slow, controlled movements will do the trick. You're not going to use a lot of weight, but you're going to be doing way more damage to the muscle than if you were using more weight and working multiple muscles.
And that damage is good, because the more its damaged -- the stronger that it is going to grow.
But to learn to box, you're going to need to train explosively, not slow and controlled like you would to gain weight, you've got a choice to make. You will definitely get strong with isolation, and you will definitely get bigger with compound movements. But you've got to choose.
You should never workout for more than an hour, after that and you're going to be burning more muscle for fuel than you will be building. I always workout for 1 hour, I highly recommend that to you. I typically workout 2 days on, then rest and let my body heal for 1 day off. I find that to work best.
When I started, I weighed 90 pounds -- 6 months later I boasted an impressive 120, and people noticed. Just eat everything you can, and you're going to need supplements.
I recommend Muscle Milk for Whey Protien, hands down, take it atleast 2 times a day. Post work-out and before bed. After lifting weights your body needs the protein to build muscle. And if you get protien before you go to sleep, your body will use it to build muscle while it rests.
You're also going to want a weight gainer. I have tried a lot, and the winner here is True Mass by BSN. Take that in the morning when you wake up, and you will feel empowered all day.
www.advantagesupplements.com is the best prices for these supplements, you won't find cheaper. Trust me.
If you really get into it, I HIGHLY recommend getting some CellMass and N.O. Xplode by BSN. And finally, to complete your supplement stack: add in Nitrix by BSN. Also from Advantagesupplements.com
But those 3 supplements are VERY expensive, and you don't need them that bad. I would recommend getting a Creatine supplement though, try GNC brand. Its not the greatest, but buy it in the first week of the month -- and its very reasonably priced. Good luck!
