Md Competition
Can someone explain the different stages of Medical School?

Medical School is the one after university where one earns a MD degree right?
Figures such as duration, study/work environment, competition, testing...
for internship, residency, fellowship...

Thanks

Well, my sister is a doctor. This is what the training path looked like for her.

Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering (at one time she had thought to do biomedical engineering, but didn't really enjoy research).

Four years of medical schools, including:

Two years of labs and lectures. Anatomy class and dissecting a cadaver in the first semester are memorable. First year students have to hang out with each other because they smell like formaldehyde and nobody else wants to be around them. These days, medical students often hire note-taking services to attend lectures and share notes because the medical students are too busy studying to actually attend class.

Two years of clinical rotations, in which you get practical experience in several medical specialties, including ob/gyn, emergency medicine, radiology, psychiatry, etc.

At that point you graduate from medical school and get your MD degree. You are also applying for internships and residencies in your chosen field. You may visit hospitals, clinics, and schools far from your medical school to interview. With any luck, you are matched to a program you like, and your internship and/or residency will begin on July 1.

My sister was in a radiology residency for five years. Nowadays, medical residents cannot be made to work more than 100 hours a week, and she laments that the people that are coming into the field are not as dedicated as they used to be, nor do they build the kind of experience that residents used to build when they worked more.

At the end of her residency, my sister passed her board examinations and became a board-certified radiologist. At this point, she had been making about $30,000 a year, but accepted a fellowship in pediatric radiology at a children's hospital and began making about $50,000 a year. Remember, this is her 6th year out of medical school, and her student loans are huge, but she's hoping that the fellowship and the further specialty will help her make more money in the future.

After that year-long fellowship, my sister went into private practice, where she really stressed at first about making her quota of "films read", but she was at last making a lot of money. Later, she returned to the hospital where she did her residency and in turn became the director in charge of radiology residents.

We appreciate you looking at our Md Competition information.
