Why do different strings on an instrument make differents sounds?
I've made a homemade "guitar" for school by putting the same kind of rubber bands around a shoebox. I'm wondering why each string makes a different sound, even though they are exactly alike.
It looks like this

A few reasons:
1) They are not perfectly alike - they will have different elasticity and density, which will affect the frequency of vibration and the pitch.
2) They will be under differing amounts of strain (as they are stretched more/less)
3) The position of the bands along the box will affect the sound waves reflected back towards you
