How to Lose Weight
Unfortunately, there’s no magic pill that will mysteriously evaporate excess fat as we sleep. The reality is that the healthiest and best way to lose weight, and also keep it off, is to simply limit caloric intake while increasing physical activity. Of course, the logistics can be a bit more involved than that, so here are some helpful tips on how to lose weight the right way, through diet and exercise.
Dieting tips
Avoid becoming bored with the foods that you eat while modifying your diet. Look for ways to spruce up the dishes that you prepare to lessen the chances you’ll “cheat” and to increase the likelihood that you’ll view your diet as a complete lifestyle change, rather than a temporary denial. Use dried herbs, spices, and extras like lemon juice to give foods more flavor without adding empty calories.
Instead of depriving yourself of all of your favorite foods, reward yourself at the end of the week with a reasonable portion of one of your favorite things to eat. Many dieters feel that deprivation will only lead to desperation, and this small weekly treat lessens the chance of cheating or overindulging.
Eat a serving of dry roasted peanuts with reduced salt for a healthy snack. Dip apple slices or a banana into peanut butter for a delicious treat that will curb your hunger, but not cause weight gain.
Rather than going it alone, inform your friends and family of your goals and let them know that you’ll be needing their support. Find a buddy to exercise with, and share your dieting tips as well as goals. Many people find that it’s helpful to tell others about their quest, not only for the additional support, but because it gives them an extra incentive to reach their goal.
Exercise tips
Too tired to exercise? Drink a cup of coffee, green tea, or diet soda to give yourself that boost of energy you need to complete your workout. Caffeine may also help to temporarily increase metabolism, allowing you to burn even more calories as you exercise.
Mix up your exercise routine by adding some interval training. While walking, speed up the pace for a few minutes, and then slow it down again. If you happen to be walking farther than a mile or so, alternate with a run-walk in addition to some arm movements. Or consider using some ankle weights to help strengthen the muscles in the legs.
If you’re planning to buy an exercise video to follow along with, be sure to select something that includes activities that you’re already able to do and feel comfortable with. Popular aerobic exercises include stair stepping, dancing, or sports-based activities. If you’re a beginner, look for one that is considered low-impact to minimize the risk of injury.
Dancing is great for weight loss as it gets your heart pumping, your toes tapping, and also elevates your mood. If you like variety, look for a video that contains cross-training, which offers more than one type of exercise.
It’s common for dieters to hit a plateau, however, this temporary stall in weight loss can discourage even the strongest willed, and can cause some people to stop exercising altogether. By stepping up your exercise routine and increasing your level of physical activity you’ll give your body that extra push it needs to get itself back into the muscle-building, fat-burning mode.
Besides ending the frustrating plateau, an increase in exercise will also help you sleep better. Just be sure to finish your workout at least three hours before bedtime to ward off sleeplessness.
