We have 625 sq ft of patio. How many boxes of 12" sq. ceramic tile will it take to cover it?
Also, how many 25 lb bags of thin set will it take? Trying to figure if we can afford it. Thanks.
As the other answers have said you will need 625 square feet of tile plus 5 to 10% for waste so 656 to 688 square feet. If the concrete patio is smooth you will need approximately 8- 50 lb bags of thinset. Also you may need some antifracture membrane for any cracks or joints in the concrete. As far as the # of boxes of tile the amount in a box varies from style to style. If you are in an area where you get freezing weather you also need to be sure that the tile is porcelain as ceramic is not freeze thaw stable, (it will crack in freezing weather). You also need to know how slippery the tile is when wet. AKA coefficient of friction. There is a scale for that and you want that # to 6 or higher for outside use. As to cost. These are ballpark figures.
Tile 656 square feet @ $4.50= $2952.00
Thinset 8 bags @ $ 35.00 $280.00
Grout 2 bags @ $ 19.00 $ 38.00
Ballpark total $3270.00 plus tax
As you can see the major expense is the tile itself and there are many tiles that cost less than the $4.50 I quoted. Just be sure that it is porcelain and not slippery. Have fun. It will look great when done!
