The smell of Weightlifting plates?
Hello all,
I just purchased a 100 pound barbell weight set at sports authority and it comes with the barbell and 100 pounds worth of weights. The weights are in turn the color black so i don't know if there supposed to have a distinct oily rubber smell due to the staining of the plate or what? Is this something i should worry about... BTW the plates feel a little greasy and i have took a rag across them and the bar and black material came off of it... Thanks
It appears you have purchased steel weights, which are a good investment, because they will never wear out. The weights come with a thin film of oil on them. Since the weights are steel, they will rust when exposed to moisture, such as water or humidity. To stop a steel plate from rusting you have to keep a thin film of oil on them. What I do is I have a rag that has already been soaked in oil and I keep that by the weights. Every couple of weeks I just wipe down the plates. I keep my weight equipment in my basement so there is always moisture present. You don't want the plates dripping with oil, but they do need that thin coat of oil to protect them. I use the normal steel weights for my leg press machine. I use a very light oil (3 in 1 oil), but you can use just about any oil on them. I would stay away from WD 40 (The WD stands for Water Displacing) it was not really made to protect steel, but if that is the only oil you have then use it.
They do make steel weight lifting plates that do not rust, but these are considerably more expensive.
There are two other alternatives, but both are time consuming and one is expensive.
The first alternative is to clean off all of the oil on the plates. Prime them and paint them. The problem with this is that the paint will eventually chip off. You will then have to take the old paint off and repaint the plates.
The second alternative is to coat the plates in rubber. The hardware store sells rubber coating for tools. You just prep the metal (per instructions on the can) and then paint the rubber on. This can also rip after time and you would have to re-apply the rubber coating. This rubber coating isn't cheap and will probably take several cans to do all of your weights. They do sell rubber coated plates and like the non rusting steel plates are considerably more expensive. I use a set on my with my weight bench.
