When building muscle, which method is more effective? Using Free weights, or using Fitness machines?
In direct answer to your question, fitness machines. However, bare in mind that using fitness machines do not build up core strength. U do not exercise your stability muscles. You are simply pinpointing certain muscles. By stability, i mean the small muscles that are built by u having to stabilise the barbell when doing a bench press (for example) so that it doesnt drop.
So although using fitness machines will build more muscles on the point u are training (eg your pectorals if u are using the bench machine), when it comes to using your muscles in every day use (pushing a heavy box for example) u may find that your lack of strong stability muscles means u cannot maximise the strength your chest and triceps have to offer. Think of the stability muscles like the nuts and bolts that hold a car together. U can have a powerful engine, but what use is it if the moment u switch the car on the engine slips and hits the floor!
Summary: fitness machines build more muscles, but free weights are my recommendation for all round training.
